CFO Network Quarterly Executive Finance Market Intelligence‍ - October 2026

The latest data for CFO and Finance Director appointments across Yorkshire and the East Midlands.

Executive summary

The third quarter was characterised by selective hiring and increasingly demanding finance leadership briefs. Our published regional movers lists identify 40 senior finance appointments in Yorkshire and 29 notable moves across the East Midlands and Lincoln. These are valuable indicators of where businesses are investing in leadership, although the two publications use different reporting bases.

Across our conversations with CFOs, Boards and investors, we continue to see a strong focus on cash, operational performance, reporting and transformation. Employers want finance leaders who can protect the fundamentals while contributing confidently to growth, investment and change.

Yorkshire activity spans industrial and infrastructure businesses, consumer and distribution groups and professional services. The East Midlands list illustrates similar diversity, with appointments across manufacturing, healthcare, education, consumer businesses and specialist services.

Quarter at a glance

  ‍The headline narrative

  • The market remains active, but senior hiring decisions are considered and increasingly focused on the precise leadership requirement.
  • The Yorkshire sector mix is broad, with industrial and engineering businesses accounting for 22.5% of reported moves.
  • Private and investor-backed organisations continue to feature prominently; eight Yorkshire appointments were PE-backed.
  • Across both regions, CFO and FD briefs increasingly combine financial control with commercial influence, systems and transformation.
  • Interim executive finance leadership is a practical option for businesses managing transition, complex projects or a carefully planned permanent search.

Reading the quarterly movement

Our previous newsletter reported 43 Yorkshire and 42 East Midlands appointments for March–May. The Q3 published lists report 40 and 29 respectively. We would not interpret the difference as a precise measure of market decline: the reports have different selection and classification bases. The Yorkshire movers commentary separately cites a 14% like-for-like increase within its own tracking series.

For Pratap Executive, the more useful insight is the character of hiring. Boards are looking closely at the contribution a CFO or FD can make to the wider business, and the best candidates are equally thoughtful about strategy, leadership teams and the scope of the role.

Regional coverage

Yorkshire appointments are concentrated in a wide range of business communities, with Leeds and Sheffield accounting for 21 of the 40 reported moves. The East Midlands list extends across employers in healthcare, education, engineering, manufacturing, consumer and business services, reflecting the breadth of the regional economy.

Where hiring was strongest

Yorkshire | sector activity

Industrial, engineering and infrastructure businesses accounted for nine of the 40 Yorkshire appointments (22.5%). Consumer, retail and distribution businesses followed with eight (20%), and professional and business services with seven (17.5%). Technology and property/construction each contributed four moves (10%).

East Midlands & Lincoln | breadth of employers

The 29 published appointments reflect a diverse employer base, spanning sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, education, professional services, technology, leisure and consumer-facing businesses. This demonstrates the breadth of demand for senior finance leadership across the region, from established organisations to specialist and growing businesses.

This breadth is important. Regional CFO and FD opportunities are not confined to major cities or any single industry. They arise wherever businesses need stronger financial reporting, commercial insight, governance or experienced leadership to navigate growth and change.

‍Ownership and investor activity

Yorkshire

Privately owned businesses accounted for 25 of the 40 Yorkshire appointments (62.5%). Eight appointments (20%) were within PE-backed businesses, five (12.5%) within listed companies or listed groups and two (5%) in public or not-for-profit organisations. The PE-backed share is higher than the 9% quoted in the preceding Yorkshire tracking commentary.

East Midlands & Lincoln

Of the 29 published appointments, two were identified as investor-backed and one within a listed business. The remaining 26 reflect a wider mix of organisations, providing a snapshot of senior finance movement across different ownership structures in the East Midlands.

‍The changing finance leadership brief

The CFO and FD role continues to extend well beyond reporting. CEOs want an influential partner who can challenge constructively, improve the quality of decisions and develop the team. Investors and lenders expect confidence in cash, forecasts and the key drivers of performance. Finance leaders increasingly need to support systems, data and transformation without losing sight of business-as-usual delivery.

  • Cash and working capital: clear forecasting, discipline and visibility of short-term pressures.
  • Commercial partnership: insight that helps operational leaders make better decisions.
  • Transformation: improved reporting, systems, data and processes.
  • Leadership: building resilient teams and developing future finance capability.

Interim and fractional executive leadership

In our conversations across Yorkshire and the East Midlands, interim CFO and FD appointments are increasingly discussed as a deliberate leadership choice. They can provide continuity during succession or a permanent search, lead a defined transformation programme, strengthen cash management or support a business through investment and restructuring.

At executive level, the benefit is often the combination of experience and pace. The right interim can help a Board address an immediate priority while leaving space to make the right long-term appointment. Fractional leadership can also be an effective option for businesses that need senior input without a full-time executive requirement.

Looking ahead Q4 2026 / 2027

The final quarter is likely to be shaped by a combination of opportunity and caution. The Autumn Budget is a consideration for businesses reviewing investment, costs and hiring. We expect Boards to remain selective, but we continue to see reasons for confidence where organisations have a clear leadership need and a compelling proposition.

For employers, clarity of brief and a well-run process will be important. For CFOs and FDs, the most attractive opportunities will offer a strong leadership team, a credible strategy and the ability to make a meaningful difference.

Our expectation is that demand for interim CFOs, Finance Directors and senior finance specialists will remain resilient through Q4 and into 2027. Across Yorkshire and the East Midlands, we see opportunities particularly where businesses need experienced leadership for a defined period rather than waiting for a permanent appointment.

We anticipate continued interest in interim support for leadership transitions, cash and working capital improvement, finance systems and reporting projects, investor readiness and post-acquisition integration. Private equity-backed and owner-managed businesses are particularly well placed to benefit from flexible executive expertise when priorities change quickly.

Fractional finance leadership is also likely to remain attractive to growing businesses that need senior strategic input but do not yet require a full-time CFO. At the same time, longer permanent notice periods may encourage Boards to plan interim cover earlier to maintain momentum and stability.

Pratap Executive View

We expect interim executive finance to become a more deliberate part of leadership planning, not simply a response to an unexpected departure. This is a forward-looking assessment based on our regional market conversations, rather than a quantified forecast of appointment volumes.
